(Note: I'm using the details tag for spoilers (since cut tags vanish with a direct link to the post). I am not sure this will actually work, particularly for screenreaders - let me know!)

I made a list of my five favorite Asian characters, but then I realized that all of them were created by white people, except for possibly Koi Boi. (He was introduced during the Ryan North-Erika Henderson run of Squirrel Girl.) So I'm going to read a bunch more books by Asian authors and then get back to you. In the meantime, a-spec headcanons for five fandoms!

Good Omens: I see Anathema Device as an aromantic lesbian. There's an aromantic Anathema Device tag on AO3 and a lesbian Anathema Device tag, but no overlap. Still, be the change, right?

Spoilers for & grumping about Good Omens season 2:
I always saw Aziraphale and Crowley as aromantic asexual queerplatonic partners, but that's been thoroughly jossed by season 2. Still, hooray for queer romance! I wish it had been made explicit before the storyline turned tragic, though. It would have been so easy to just let them kiss as part of their season 1 happy ending.

Frozen: I see Elsa as aromantic, because her arc centers on platonic love, and because it's a way of reclaiming the ice queen cliché. I even wrote a short fic about it! The fic's post-Frozen II, so I wish I'd incorporated Honeymaren, but I'm otherwise still happy with it.

She-Ra and the Princesses of Power: I see Frosta as an aromantic asexual, partly because of the aforementioned ice queen thing, but mostly because there's no evidence otherwise. (Also, there's a cool fic! It's not even the only aroace Frosta fic.) I think Mermista's an aromantic pansexual who has a queerplatonic thing with Sea Hawk; it took them ages to figure out what their relationship was, which is why they keep sending conflicting messages. Entrapta reads as aromantic and agender to me, and she's literally wearing the ace pride colors, so I'll throw in ace-flux too. Entrapta is proud to identify as a triple-A battery. (Edit: She's autistic, so, quadruple-A?)

Temeraire: I really like that the Corps as a whole deprioritizes romantic love in favor of the captains' relationships with their dragons, which read as queerplatonic to me. I think Jane Roland was the first openly aromantic allosexual Laurence met, and that helped him come to terms with his own orientation. Temeraire and Iskierka are also pretty explicitly aromantic allosexuals.

Little Women: I definitely see Jo March as aroace, and definitely some flavor of trans, too. Not sure about Beth - she's so rigidly desexualized that it's hard to figure out who she is under all the ableism.

I thought I might as well spoiler-tag this, although it is, you know, over 150 years old. Note: I'm using they/them pronouns for Jo.
It's unclear if Beth ever had a crush on Laurie - when Jo says they thought Beth loved him, Beth says, "How could I, when he was so fond of you?" which... isn't quite a no. I did enjoy this fic where Jo dies and Beth lives, which has an interesting take on the siblings' relationships with Laurie.

I really liked that Jo wanting to reciprocate Laurie's romantic affection and not being able to was a major plot point. I found Jo's marriage to Professor Bhaer kind of interesting. Their marriage could be simply a cover for them becoming business partners and chosen family. Running a boys' school and marrying a poor man definitely left them freer in their gender presentation than they otherwise would have been. Remember, when Bhaer proposed, Jo said they were only marrying him because he was poor and that they would not marry him if he didn't let them work.

All that being said, I'd highly recommend So Many Beginnings: A Little Women Remix by Bethany C Morrow. In addition to all the characters being Black,
Beth survives with a chronic illness, Jo is aromantic, and Laurie and Jo are in a queerplatonic relationship.

Does anyone have a-spec headcanons? Or recommendations of books by Asian authors? Or the holy grail, a-spec headcanons for books with Asian authors? (Context: The main character of the linked book self-identifies as "asexual and probably some sort of aromantic.")

Snowflake Challenge #15

My top 5 fandoms for 2023 were:

In no particular order:

She-Ra and the Princesses of Power: I requested Scorfuma for [community profile] femslashex and [personal profile] reflectedeve, who's one of my favorite femslash artists of all time, gave me this gorgeous Scorfuma art and it's amazing, oh my god, you need to see it.

Also, this summer, I did multiple full rewatches of She-Ra. I love Scorpia!!! And Entrapta. And Glitradora. Actually, a lot of characters and ships. I haven't managed to actually get any She-Ra fics to the point of posting, but I've spent a lot of time doing research for various Scorpia fics that I suspect will never leave my notebook. (I'm happy to share book recommendations and links if anyone else needs to research amputation or transracial adoption.)

Sherlock Holmes: I did [community profile] holmestice this spring and participated in the final July Writing Prompts on [community profile] watsons_woes, so I wrote a decent number of Sherlock Holmes fics (mostly very short). They're all on my AO3 or linked in my sticky post.

The Old Guard: I matched on Andy/Quỳnh for [community profile] femslashex, so I spent a solid month living and breathing guilt-ridden immortal bisexuals. I rewatched the movie and even reread the comics. I read some great fics, too - check out my AO3 bookmarks if you want recs.

MCU: [personal profile] ziazippy5379 gave me this great time-traveling PeggyNat fic for [community profile] femslashex. You should definitely read it if you like spy tropes. Aside from that, I haven't done much in the MCU fandom this year. I loved Wakanda Forever, but I kind of checked out of the MCU fandom after finding out more about Cap 4. (CNN; Variety; The Mary Sue. There's also the anti-Semetic connotations of the original name - they changed it, but the fact that it took them this long to realize there was an issue doesn't feel like a great sign for the project.) Ugh. Is it really this hard to make an anti-colonialist, anti-apartheid Captain America movie when you literally have Anthony Mackie to do it? (They might still manage it, I'm just... not inclined to give Disney the benefit of the doubt.)

Good Omens: I was... not a fan of season 2, to put it mildly. But Good Omens just barely earns its place on this list because of this drawing of a plant that's technically Good Omens fanart that's gotten more kudos than all of my other works combined. ...And because the author of the fic for which I made said fanart wrote a sequel and it's so good. ...And because I spent a fair bit of time writing a 3k fic about Anathema Device that I may or may not ever share with anyone but am nonetheless proud of. (I love Anathema so much, folks. Why was she not in season 2.) I guess I spent more time in Good Omens fandom than I realized.

My top 5 fandom spaces (Discord, Twitter, etc.) in 2023 were:
  1. AO3, of course
  2. Dreamwidth
  3. Tumblr - social media is not my thing, but it's where a lot of the fanart is. (If you're a fanartist reading this, please please crosspost to AO3 where there's a good filtering system and no algorithm and I will actually see your art, please, I know it's inconvenient but also I will love you forever.)
  4. Etsy - I love stickers
  5. Fanlore - I like to gawk at the Supernatural articles

The top 5 things I did to contribute to fandom in 2023 were:
  1. Leaving AO3 comments! I leave a lot of AO3 comments. Often quite long ones. It makes me happy.
  2. Writing fic
  3. Uh. Participating in exchanges? If that counts separately from writing fic?
  4. Writing image descriptions of fanart on Tumblr (I hate logging into Tumblr but I love writing image descriptions.)
  5. Sending friendly Tumblr asks? I guess? I can't think of anything else for #5 so whatever

My top 5 most appreciated fandom contributions were:

If I'm being honest, this is just the top five fics that I wanted to link to and not actually based on any kind of rigorous judgement.

there's nothing she won't burn for [personal profile] slashmarks in [community profile] femslashex
Fandom: The Old Guard (movie)
Relationship: Immortal Wives
Summary: Angsty unsent letters between Andy and Quỳnh, set roughly between the end of the movie and the epilogue, about 2k words
Commentary: This is a messy, self-indulgent character study with no real plot that I wrote to get a feel for the characters. (Even the title is self-indulgent - I don't normally do song lyric titles, but for [community profile] femslashex , I decided to let myself.) It was a last-minute decision to post it as a treat. I'd never posted anything like it before and I didn't expect it to get as warm a reception as it did.

searching for a light for [personal profile] slashmarks in [community profile] femslashex
Fandom: The Old Guard (movie)
Relationship: Immortal Wives
Summary: Andy rescuing Quỳnh and the two resting and recovering together, hurt/comfort, about 2.5k words
Commentary: I'm quite pleased with this one, although it's very, very AU. It's a nice bedtime read, I think. I first encountered the song that titled this fic through this lovely Sherlock vid by [personal profile] rachelindeed .

Bad Moon Rising for [personal profile] lupa_lunae in [community profile] holmestice
Fandom: Sherlock (BBC)
Relationship: Johnlock
Summary: Werewolf fluff, about 1k words
Commentary: My best attempt at writing werewolf!Sherlock. Neither canon-compliant nor very in-character, because my willingness to actually engage with BBC Sherlock as written is... limited. Takes a significant amount of inspiration from ACD Holmes, like both of my other Sherlock fics.

With Me There Is A Limit in [community profile] watsons_woes
Fandom: Officially ACD Holmes, but compatible with many adaptations
Summary: Limerick about Holmes being a bad roommate
Commentary: The title is a quote from The Adventure of the Musgrave Ritual, which I maintain is the cutest Sherlock Holmes story. Watson tries to get Holmes to clean their flat. Holmes offers to tell Watson a story instead of cleaning and Watson immediately gives in because he can't resist Holmes telling stories. That is the entire plot. How adorable is that?

In the Water in [community profile] watsons_woes
Fandom: Several seconds of footage of a kitten wearing a deerstalker hat and meowing (it's a long story)
Summary: 100 words set in [personal profile] graycardinal 's kitten!Holmes universe.
Commentary: By my count, there are four kitten!Holmes works by now ([personal profile] graycardinal 's fic, [personal profile] evilinsanemonkey 's podfic of [personal profile] graycardinal 's fic, [personal profile] rachelindeed 's amazing multiverse vid, and my drabble). Such is the power of Holmestice.
